The Seychelles

  • Seychelles, officially the Republic of Seychelles (French: République des Seychelles; Creole: La Repiblik Sesel), is an archipelagic country of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean at the eastern edge of the Somali Sea. Its capital and largest city, Victoria, is 1,500 kilometres (800 nautical miles) east of mainland Africa. Nearby island countries and territories include Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, and the French overseas regions of Mayotte and Réunion to the south; the Maldives and the Chagos Archipelago (administered by the United Kingdom as British Indian Ocean Territory) to the east. It is the least populated sovereign African country, with an estimated 2020 population of 98,462.

  • Seychelles was uninhabited before being encountered by Europeans in the 16th century. Thus, it faced competition for French and British interests until coming under complete British control in the late 18th century. Since proclaiming independence from the United Kingdom in 1976, it has developed from a predominantly agricultural society to a market-based diversified economy characterized by rapidly rising service, public sector, and tourism activities. From 1976 to 2015, nominal GDP grew nearly 700%, and purchasing power parity was nearly 1600%. Since the late 2010s, the government has encouraged foreign investment.

  • Today, Seychelles boasts the highest nominal per capita GDP of any African nation. It has the second-highest Human Development Index of any African country after Mauritius. It is currently the only African country classified as a high-income economy by the World Bank. Before, it was one of two African countries classified as a high-income economy by the World Bank (the other was Mauritius). Seychellois culture and society is an eclectic mix of French, British, and African influences, with more recent infusions of Chinese and Indian elements. The country is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, and the Commonwealth of Nations.

Our location

Mahé is the largest island in the Seychelles, with an area of 157.3 square kilometres (60.7 square miles), lying in the northeast of the Seychellean nation in the Somali Sea part of the Indian Ocean. The population of Mahé was 77,000 as of the 2010 census. It has 86% of the country's total population and is home to the capital city, Victoria. The island was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French governor of the Isle de France (modern-day Mauritius). Mahé was first visited by the British in 1609 and not revisited by Europeans until Lazare Picault's expedition of 1742. The French navy frégate Le Cerf (English: The Deer) arrived at Port Victoria on November 1, 1756. On board was Corneille Nicholas Morphey, leader of the French expedition, which claimed the island for the King of France by laying a Stone of Possession on Mahé, the Seychelles' oldest monument, now on display in the National Museum, Victoria. In August 1801, a Royal Navy frigate, HMS Sibylle, captured the French frigate Chiffonne on the island. Mahé remained a French possession until 1812, when it became a British colony. It remained a colony until 1976, when the Seychelles became an independent nation. Mahé had a vast land reclamation project due to a housing shortage in Bel Ombre and the Port of Victoria. Mahé was primarily a plantation owned by the Frichot family. In 1977, France-Albert René staged a coup d’état and forced all the Frichots out of the Seychelles or into prison. Some, such as Robert Frichot, were held in René's jails for several months in 1978 and told to leave the Seychelles for their safety upon release.

Our boat operates from Mahé Island and is fully licenced and insured.

When is the best time to visit Seychelles?

Seychelles has a tropical, warm climate the whole year, with an average temperature between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius. Seychelles, on the other hand, does not experience much variation due to its tropical location, and the weather is ideal for a visit all year. It’s an archipelago that consists of more than 100 islands. During a trip to the Seychelles, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of lush forests and the ocean.

Best time to fish

A Seychelles fishing trip requires proper planning. First, anglers must decide when to go fishing in the region. A peak fishing season starts in October and ends in May. Weather conditions are comfortable, and most fish species get active during these months. Fishing in the Seychelles is very productive in April, when the peak fishing season ends. However, many fish species are active this month. The weather is good, and the waters are calm now. Also, anglers have an excellent chance to land a trophy fish.

It’s also important to note that anglers should plan their fishing adventures with the local fish species in mind. Some species of fish are active year-round. However, seasonal fish species only bite well at certain times. Fishing in the Seychelles is very productive in the late fall. November is a great time to enjoy a variety of fishing techniques, such as bottom fishing, jigging, fly fishing, and popping. Such species as marlin, sailfish, tuna, and trevally get active during the summer. Spring is a great time to catch bonefish, mahi-mahi, and marlin.
